Modified Atmosphere Packaging

We have long invested in technology and materials to offer Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) solutions, and we are continually innovating to enhance our portfolio of products.

MAP is a packaging technique that can extend the shelf-life of contents. This packaging helps to reduce the impact of food waste, which is one of the biggest sustainability issues that we face.

Food Waste

Over 10 million tonnes of food are wasted annually in the UK alone, and this figure increases worldwide. Ideal solutions to this problem would include only producing the food that can be used, or redistributing any excess to those that need it. However, there are ways that packaging can help to support the reduction of food waste too.

Packaging is an indispensable element of the food industry. The key roles for packaging is to protect and preserve the product within, and to support the sale of goods. Packaging can also support the extension of food freshness for multiple days, depending on food contents. WRAP research has shown that extending product life by just one day could save 250,000 tonnes of food waste in the UK annually.

A longer shelf-life means that food products can be shipped over longer distances, which can increase the range of distribution. Additionally, it can reduce the frequency and number of deliveries required.

Extending shelf-life increases the time window for consumer purchasing.

What is Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP)?

Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is a shelf-life extension technique for food packaging, which is achieved by replacing the oxygen with a protective gas mix within a sealed pack. The removal of oxygen inhibits the growth of microbes and slows down the process of food decay.

Together with lowering the storage temperature and maximising the levels of hygiene during production and packing, the food product will stay fresh for significantly longer.

Our MAP is manufactured from paperboard that is laminated with a high barrier, multi-layer film, which is suitable for food grade gases.
