Travel Packaging

Passengers are taking their high-street preferences for food packaging through to travel experiences. As such, the move to paperboard packaging is prevalent in the travel market.

We work with travel operators to develop airline food packaging and packaging suitable for rail and sea travel. We understand the specific needs of supply chains across the travel sector and partner with customers to enhance passenger experiences.

Travel Packaging Sustainability

Travel Packaging Sustainability

Passengers are increasingly aware of sustainable packaging options and are driving travel operators to make more responsible choices in food presentation. Initiatives such as the ‘Fly Net Zero’ pledge to achieve net zero carbon by 2025, are also encouraging operators to focus on sustainability.

In the development of our travel packaging, we look to bring circularity into already complex processes. This includes evaluating airline food packaging, as well as packaging for rail and sea travel, with a preference to use light, sustainably sourced materials.

Our travel packaging projects often come from caterers looking to change from plastic to paperboard packaging. Our stocked range includes many paperboard options for customers to choose from and gives us a variety of packs to customise into bespoke food packaging for the travel market. We can also introduce paper windows and other alternative materials to make our customers’ packaging stand out to passengers that have the flexibility to choose on-board food.

Industry standards for measuring cabin waste data, set by organisations such as the Aviation Sustainability Forum, are also driving more focus on the circular economy. Our products include on-pack recycling instructions to help cabin staff to separate packaging waste and provide clear recyclability messaging to passengers.

Streamlining Travel Food Packaging

Streamlining Travel Food Packaging

Premium travel companies look for attractive, functional packaging to delight passengers. Our high-quality packs help our customers to differentiate their food offering to support brand positioning. We partner with international catering companies to develop custom food packaging for the private travel sector. This includes working with Air Culinaire to adapt our Stagione® pots to serve premium on-board meals, offer consistently well-presented food, and rationalise their packaging range.

Preparing food for on-board consumption is complicated, with a variety of processes for food and food packaging to go through. Multi-purpose packaging that can be used through food manufacture, freezing, loading to transport, on-board storage, heating, and foodservice supports the streamlining of the process.

We offer packaging that is made from materials that are certified for freezing and heating, increasing packaging usability and reducing the time required to prepare and process meals. The versatility of our packs also helps to reduce the variety of formats required to cover different food types, simplifying packaging ranges for travel caterers.

We have also worked with major train providers to develop packaging for meal solutions across different classes of travel.

Travel Packaging Sizing

Travel Packaging Sizing

Paperboard is a flexible material that can be used for many packaging applications. This gives travel caterers the flexibility to adapt paperboard packs to enhance passenger experiences and suit menu items, without the need to invest in expensive tooling each time.

Travel packaging often needs to be a specific size to fit standard cabin trays within on-board storage and service trolleys. Our Stagione® range is ideal for this and we have developed many insert options to hold variations of Stagione® securely within standard cabin trays. This has proven extremely successful in offering effective food presentation across several well-known airlines and fare types.

We can adapt our packaging to fit specific requirements for customers that utilise different tray sizes. This can be in the form of updating our existing packaging to bespoke sizes, or in designing new packs from scratch to offer further differentiation to elevate the passenger experience.

Travel Packaging Safety

Travel Packaging Safety

Safety is paramount across the travel industry, with transport processes introducing additional hazards and complexity. On-board catering is well regulated, with requirements to meet strict food safety regulations to protect passengers and staff.

Highly capable materials and integrated lids support our customers in meeting hygiene standards, with food moving through many stages before arriving with the consumer. Pack robustness and leakproof materials reduce the risk of spills, supporting passenger safety and the delivery of visually appealing food.

Travel operators aim to minimise disruption through the preparation and service of on-board meals. We work with testing partners to prove the safety of our products across common travel applications. This provides our customers with confidence in the safety and reliability of our packs, supports on-time travel schedules, and promotes customer satisfaction.

We also work with customers to manufacture packs that are safe for handling by crews and passengers, even immediately after heating. Specific materials offer insulating layers to keep foot contents hot, without transferring heat to the hands of servers and travellers. This helps to elevate the passenger experience through the delivery of hot food, with reduced risk of heat transfer.
